in a week's time

A lot can happen in a week's time.  You can plant some seeds, add some water, and when you pull the tray down from the fridge top seven days later, you find this:
Sprouts!  Lots and lots of sprouts!  Which if you're Martha or any other person who's ever had a garden, is no great feat.  But if you're me, you're surprised and actually, dare I say it - proud of the fact you've grown something other than mold on forgotten unidentifiable food that's been in the refrigerator for months.
These tall ones in the middle are yellow squash, zucchini and a mixed group of winter squashes.  I can't decide if I like the fact that I bought a mixed variety or not.  I'm impatient and I want to know what each of them are now, but I'm also kind of excited about the discovery of it all as they grow, too.
Look at the teeny basil!  Isn't it great?  Like little clovers or something.
Okay, before I gush any further, I'll show what isn't going so well.  See these?  These are my problem children, otherwise known as Sweet Pepper Mix.  I'm not sure exactly what is going on with them, I think I probably didn't stuff the seed down into the peat pattie far enough or something.  Anyway, they're stunted.
So I've decided to throw them back into the oven.  Or an egg carton with plastic wrap on top, whatever lets you sleep at night.  I hope these eventually grow; I don't want to spend $2 each for them at the grocer anymore!
And last but not least, here's the bag I had worked on for just a couple of days; complete with the handles that took at least four days because I kept frogging them.  And these are the ones I ended up with?  I know.  I don't like them either.  Actually, I have to say I'm thinking of felting the whole thing, because after throwing three (lightweight, even!) items in it, it dragged to my ankles.  Okay, not really, but it just reminds me of why I don't care for unlined and unfelted crochet/knitted bags.  They sag like nobody's business!  So I'm pretty sure I'm going to felt it.  Maybe.

A lot of time when you start seeds, you can have a fungus problem where it looks like the seedlings have been pinched and the tops fall over. It used to happen to me all the time and that's why I always plant seeds directly in the ground instead of starting them indoors. It's caused by not enough air circulation and I never could get the ratios right. Hope you have better luck!

If you do decide to felt the bag, I'd try and felt the white wool first because wool that's been bleached white will not always felt. The bag's too pretty to be partially felted!

mmmm seedlings... so cute. I might have to try growing some too.

(And that is why I lined my bag.... nobody likes sagging. Anywhere)
